Niobium addition improves the corrosion resistance of TiHfZrNbx high-entropy alloys in Hanks’ solution

High-strength TiHfZrNbx high-entropy alloys could become the ideal materials for small-diameter endovascular stents once their corrosion resistance in physiological milieu is confirmed. This work aims at evaluating of a high-entropy-alloys family Hanks’ solution 37 °C and revealing influence niobium on mechanisms dissolution passivation. The were subjected to series static dynamic electrochemical tests surface characterization, employing static/dynamic/cyclic polarizations, impedance spectroscopy, XPS, AFM, SEM. Results confirm higher compared that CP-Ti Ti6Al4V. addition considerably improves microstructural homogeneity ensures low rate greater film due lower concentration point defects. passive behaves as an n-type semiconductor composed mixture TiO2, Nb2O5, ZrO2, HfO2 oxides, with presence metallic hydroxides outermost layer. A detailed description passivation presented this work.
